Social Emotional Development

Social-Emotional Development

A strong understanding of emotions is necessary for the child to predict how others are feeling in a social setting. Empathy is developed when a child is able to respond kindly and thoughtfully to another child who may be feeling angry or upset, take another child’s perspective, and feel the same emotion as the other child is feeling as she is feeling it. Empathy is considered to be a motivating factor and mediator for the development of social competence, prosocial behavior, and altruism. Studies have shown that social success is closely related to one's ability to encode, interpret, interact, monitor own behavior, and use language to reason about social and emotional situations.
