Communication is the varied methods in which we transmit ideas, information, and feelings. We may use modalities such as eye contact; facial expression; gestures; body posture; and written, signed, or spoken language to communicate with others. Communication includes the elements of speech and language. Speech refers to verbal communication, while language refers to a rule-governed system for representing concepts through symbols, both verbal and non-verbal. Communication is closely linked to and provides much of the fundamental skills necessary for the continuing development of cognitive and social skills.
