Play Skills Therapy

Social competence with peers involves the engagement in meaningful and rewarding interactions, being liked and accepted by others, and building lasting friendships. Play is an essential part of the socialization process and its ability to mimic real-life scenarios makes it an ideal way to stimulate overall development. We emphasize the use of executive function during facilitated, meaningful play activities. We implement the process of thoroughly planning play, carrying out plans to completion, and reflecting upon actions during play or challenges that may have been encountered.  This program utilizes purposeful play to help young children develop social, emotional, cognitive abilities, and communication skills.

Your child will learn to:

  • Willingly share with other children by dividing things, trading, taking turns, and using things together.
  • Improvise and use props in a manner consistent with the objects they represent.
  • Act out a familiar routine that includes actions in a proper sequence using appropriate toys or props.
  • Remain in character while responding to (both verbally and non-verbally) and interacting with a second child in a make believe scene.
  • Engage in cooperative, imaginary play by using language to enact roles or identities; planning and acting out recognizable events, themes, or storylines and using imaginary props.
  • Maintain participation in games with rules and conform to the game rules.
